Summers In India:- Summers in India normally start from mid-April and remain until June. The mountainous northern India is a good respite from hot plains. While touring the plains, beware the hot wind and stock yourself with water, glucose, and essential salts. Although South and west India are hot, the places near the sea have a relatively lower temperature in comparison to places far off. Northeast India again has a very good climate.
Monsoons in India:- The monsoon hits north India in July, August, and early September. In the south, you can expect heavy rain in the three months after the withdrawal of the monsoon in the north. There is no rule of thumb regarding monsoon travel. Simply allow more time to reach your destination in view of floods and landslides.
Winters in India:- When the mountainous northern India is laden with snow, plains too give no respite from the chill. The mornings are foggy and visibility is low, although afternoon sunshine is worth basking in. If you are an adventurous lot and have the love for winter sports, north India is the place to be. May be if you are lucky, you might sport a Yeti as well. South India has a moderate temperature without any harshness and gives a respite from the chilly north.
WEATHER CARE
Sun Protection:- A sun hat with a brim is essential during the summer. On the beach, lotion with sun-block ingredient is necessary. There is not much choice in India (nor demand since nature has provided genetic protection), so bring your own supply. Those solar hats worn by the empire builders were rightly mocked by their colonial subjects, for they were, in fact, the secret weapon that allowed the mad dog of an Englishman to go out in the midday sun. Being made from the pitch plant, they were light and healthy and the perfect foil to sunstroke. However, these were not easy to pack. Sunglasses are essential for they not only protect your eyes from glare but from dust. The world always looks a cooler place from behind them.
Winter Care:- It is hard for anyone who has experienced a north Indian summer to believe that Delhi can be so cold in winter. The extremes of Indian weather can shock those accustomed to temperate climes. When packing always keep in mind the violent fluctuations and add a woolen sweater. On a trek, there can be a bewildering range of weather and you may need warm clothes in the morning and heavy waterproofs in the evening.
Your skin too would require pampering as the air is dry and a chapped skin is normal. So, keep yourself enriched with cold cream and moisturizers. ; |
